Duplicate friend request shows success despite 409 error

Sending a friend request to an existing friend repeatedly shows a 'request sent' confirmation instead of surfacing the failure. The console reports a 409 response with the error "Already friends with this user", so the UI is presenting success for a rejected request. The friend request flow should reflect the actual outcome and indicate that the users are already friends.
